A vortex, as it relates to the paranormal is theorized to be a manifestation of energy. In previous sections, we have addressed the idea that spirits require energy to manifest and manipulate the environment. So, a vortex is often associated with paranormal activity. Some believe a vortex to be a manifested spirit, though not in a human-like form. Others believe vortices to be gateways between dimensions, worlds, or the afterlife. They do seem to appear in areas of known activity and some people claim to sense them. So, what does a vortex look like? They can appear as white streaks that cross a photograph. They sometimes appear to have a funnel-like shape or even look like a whirlwind. There are no pictures to show what a vortex looks like because a majority of the vortex pictures out there are easily dismissed. So what can cause a false positive vortex? The list is endless. That is why a photo of a vortex is so rare. Here is a list of a few of the common things that cause false vortices: Camera straps, straps from other equipment such as recorders, hair, spider webs, strings to lamps and ceiling fans, dust, pet hair, rain, snow, and even cigarette smoke. One of the lesser known sources of a vortex happens in film cameras. There is a natural occurrence which happens when static charge builds up inside of some cameras. As film is advanced, or more frequently, when it is rewound, low humidity conditions can contribute to a buildup of static inside the camera. When this static discharges, it can cause small arcs to show up on the film. If you have ever walked on carpet and touched the door knob, sending a bright blue arc from your finger, then you've seen this event. now imagine that bright blue arc discharging right in front of film that reacts to light. A vortex that appears on video is much more compelling, though not all that difficult to discredit. Fast moving bugs can cause a moving rod or vortex to appear. The problems lie with focus and shutter speed. These were discussed in detail on the Orbs page. So, while vortices may be real, an indisputable photo of a vortex has yet to be taken. We at Sci-Tech remain open to the possibility and would gladly tender any submissions which claim to offer proof of a vortex.
