The ElectroMagnetic Field (EMF) is a natural occurrence. In fact, we are constantly surrounded by EMF our entire lives. Whether the fields are natural or man-made, electromagnetic fields can effect us in a variety of ways. It is scientifically proven that high EMF can have adverse physical and mental effects on people.

EMF is a term that covers a broad range of fields. The elecromagnetic spectrum is huge. Electromagnetic waves range from far below the long wavelength radio waves to short wavelength gamma rays. Electromagnetic fields can be caused by charged particles (static fields), magnetic fields generated by charged particles in motion (electrical lines and equipment), and radiated fields (radio towers, cellphones, microwaves, and the sun).

High EMF can cause all manner of problems for humans. High strength EMF, depending on the wavelength, can cause everything from hallucinations to cancer. In the average home, the main culprits for EMF are faulty wiring, improperly grounded electrical appliances, and emissive electronics such as televisions, microwaves, and hair dryers.

In paranormal research, it is important to keep EMF in mind for numerous reasons. An EMF meter can measure these fields and give you a reading you can record. It is important to note where high EMF fields are present in a location. Note only can you help a home or business owner identify potential trouble spots for fires, but you can identify possible causes for perceived paranormal activity. A high EMF source in the wall directly behind a bed might help explain someone seeing shadow people or having interrupted sleep.

Some of the symptoms of high EMF exposure are as follows:

  • paranoia and/or a feeling of being watched
  • visual hallucinations
  • aural hallucinations
  • headaches
  • nausea
  • depression
  • crawling sensations on the skin
  • trouble concentrating
  • forgetfulness
  • joint pain and inflammation

A condition known as Electrical Hypersensitivity is believed to play a role in some individuals' extreme reactions to high EMF. More research is needed to study the full effect of EMF on humans.

EMF is also thought to be important in paranormal activity. One theory, which relies on the idea that spirits use energy to manifest or manipulate the environment, is that EMF reading will increase in areas where paranormal activity is happening. A spike in EMF readings can sometimes be a precursor to activity.

The problem is that there are so many man made sources of EMF that a spike could simply be caused by a truck driver using his CB radio as he passes the house. Cellphones emit EMF as well. Bad wiring in a location or high-tension power lines nearby can spike EMF readings. So it is essential to take readings of an area you plan to investigate in order to establish baselines. If the baseline reading is 0.6 mG and your meter jumps to 5 mG, something interesting might be happening soon.
