Cold spots are an interesting phenomenon. Sometimes they can be explained by drafts or pockets of cold air moving through a space. Other times, there is no natural explanation for a cold spot. What is a cold spot and what do they have to do with paranormal activity?

As usual, there are many theories for cold spots. A cold spot is typically a small, localized area of space in which the temperature within the area is lower than the space surrounding it. In the paranormal aspect, a cold spot could signal the presence of a spirit. The theory is that spirits use energy to manifest and manipulate the environment. Spirits could drain that energy from batteries, equipment, people and even energy in the form of heat in the air. So, a cold spot could mean that a spirit has drained the heat from an area in order to do something.

In the opinion of Sci-Tech Paranormal, a cold spot that could signify paranormal activity is one that is significantly different than the surrounding air. A drop of only a few degrees might be caused by paranormal activity but it takes a drop of more than 10 degrees to raise a flag.

It is important to be careful when measuring cold spots. The right equipment is needed. The popular handheld IR thermometers which shoot a laser (for aiming) are used to measure surface temperatures. What is needed to accurately measure a cold spot is an ambient air thermometer. You can use IR thermometers to measure surface temperatures and could indicate a spot in the wall through which a spirit has passed. You can use them to measure ambient temps as well as long as you can attach a K-type probe to the IR laser thermometer.

It is also important to note any draft or wind sources in a room or location so they can be eliminated as sources for a cold spot. When indoors, note fans, air vents, winds and doors. When outside, check the wind speeds and direction.
